#154 – The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

No doubt because I started with Link’s Awakening on the Gameboy, but I have always had a preference for the 2D Zelda titles. There is something so much more satisfying and engaging in the top-down, handheld instalments in the franchise. I would love another game in this style, but with the runaway success of Breath of the Wild, it seems tragically unlikely.

Anyway, Skyward Sword HD left a bitter taste, so replaying this was much-needed recovery therapy.

#149 – The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

Whilst I bought Skyward Sword for the Wii – complete with a fancy gold Wiimote! – I didn’t even make it past the second dungeon, for one very simple reason: the game was absolutely unplayable, and it did an admirable job of cementing my hatred for motion controls. A hatred I still carry with me to this day, and will firmly stand by. Motion controls do not work. They have never worked. They will never be as simple, intuitive, or fun as button-based controls, and any game based around them is made poorer for it.

So when it was announced that the Switch version of Skyward Sword would have proper, button-based controls, I was actually kind of looking forward to playing it as I should have been able to play it the first time around. But it turns out you can’t always fix what is broken, and there is much more about this game to dislike than just its control scheme.

#84 – The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

I’ve been on a lot of message boards and the like, and I am just about the only person I know who grew up with Link’s Awakening on the Gameboy. I never owned a SNES – I was firmly in the Megadrive camp – and I didn’t play Ocarina of Time until the Gamecube was just about to come out, so my experience with Zelda was very limited outside of this and later the Oracle titles until much later in life.

So, you can imagine my reaction when they revealed this.

#79 – Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

One of my more unpopular opinions is that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a bad video game. I have a multitude of reasons for this which I won’t go into here…save that for the inevitable replay I subject myself to before the sequel comes out, because I’m an insane masochist who likes to suffer playing bad video games. Hyrule Warriors, though? I LOVED it. It was everything I could have asked for and more.

So, a Hyrule Warriors game focusing on Breath of the Wild? This could have gone either way. Unfortunately, it went the way I was hoping it wouldn’t.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

Whilst I enjoy the occasional (read: once every two or three years) replay of games I enjoyed the first time around, there aren’t many games I’ve played so many times that I can confidently say I know them inside out, off by heart. I’m not a speedrunner, but if I was, there are only three or four games I’d be confident in speedrunning and setting a good time for.

Oracle of Seasons is one such game.
