#74 – Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

Digimon is certainly an interesting franchise. Despite the surface similarities to Pokemon it was never actually intended to be a direct competitor – a fact that certain sections of the Pokemon fandom would do well to remember – and if you spend even a little time with the franchise you’ll realise it’s nothing like Pokemon at all.

For one thing, the games are much, much better.

Langrisser I

It seems to me like really old games (and their remakes/remasters) can go one of two ways: they either hold up brilliantly, or they’re the worst thing you’ve ever played. There is no comfortable middle ground where a retro title can be just okay – it either has that special something that keeps it enjoyable or relevant, or it’s little more than a blueprint for better, more modern titles.

With Langrisser I was expecting the latter. I got the forner.

New Super Lucky’s Tale

Gaming is a nice break from reality, but sometimes it’s nice to take a break within a break and play something that is relatively straightforward and requires a minimal amount of effort to complete, but is a little more involving than a visual novel.

Usually for me that’s a Warriors game, but this ended up serving more or less the same purpose…most of the time.

Carrion

Do you know what’s better than a good horror game? A good reverse horror game. One that lets you create the horror, experience things from the other side and, whilst not feeling a sense of complete invulnerability, feeling considerably more powerful than you would if situations were different. There’s nothing more satisfying than going on a power trip with absolutely zero consequences.

Carrion is a game that I played for free on Game Pass, but would definitely not have regretted purchasing.

Highway Blossoms: Next Exit

I played Highway Blossoms last year, and I was actually blown away by the quality of it – it’s not very often you get a visual novel fully voiced in English. It was a little rough around the edges, but overall I found it to be extremely endearing and well worth playing…or, uh, reading. VNs are video games, don’t @ me. Although maybe this should be 68.5 instead of 69, since it’s a side story rather than a new game persay. Oh well. Who’s keeping track anyway. Not me!

Anyways, I bought the expansion the second it came out and finished it over the weekend, because of course I did.

Pokémon Fire Red

I can vaguely recall how overwhelmingly excited I was when I first booted up my copy of Pokemon Red when I was nine years old…a sensation I did not get when I booted this game up for the first time, as I was fourteen years old, trying desperately to hide the fact that I still played Pokemon games to my classmates, and I…did not get along with Ruby. I didn’t think playing through Kanto was going to change my mind or anyone else’s, and it didn’t.

But for a challenge run, better this than the originals or the Let’s Go titles. So, away we go!

Ghost of Tsushima

I have a weird relationship with open world games. I have a very high tolerance for open-world busywork, which most people abhor…but I hate having my time wasted, which most people seem to love. I want to PLAY games and playing, to me, does not mean watching my character running, riding, jetpacking, or – god forbid – walking across a landscape for hours to get to an objective. Wasting time is at a premium in 90% of most open world titles – they call it “freedom” but it really isn’t if you stop to think about it for even half a second – so by and large, I don’t enjoy them.

But I really, really enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima.

Hades

It’s not very often that I buy a game at the end of the week and finish it over the weekend…and when I do, it’s usually because it’s less than 5 hours long, not because I spent literally the entire weekend on it.

…and then along came Zeus!

New Super Mario Bros. U

At this point I am completely confused – I’m not sure if I’m better or worse at platformers than I was when I was a child. I could never finish Super Mario Land as a child, which I did this year…and yet I cannot do Labyrinth Zone for the life of me in the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and I could do that as a six-year old. I suppose just because I grew up with platformers doesn’t necessarily mean I’m especially good at them.

This was another painful reminder of my lack of skill.
