#103 – Umineko No Naku Koro Ni – Episode 5: End of the Golden Witch

I had more than a few complaints about Higurashi, but there was one thing I couldn’t fault it for: the more I read, the more I wanted to read. I wanted to know just what the hell was going on with this game’s story, even if I didn’t particularly care for the characters.

Umineko is turning into the complete opposite of that.

#102 – Medievil

I’ve played an awful lot of remakes/remasters over the last console generation especially, and I’ve found them to vary wildly in quality. A good one will take the game and bring it into the current era, only with the gameplay that you would expect a modern title to have – better controls, camera angles, and so on. A bad one will just bring it into the current era with the visuals you’d expect. Some will actually be WORSE than the originals – whilst I know many people would scream at me for it, I’d define the remaster of the original Crash Bandicoot as worse, because the platforming needs to be frustratingly precise.

Where am I going with this? I don’t know. I sometimes feel the need to type these things out to frame my thoughts. Let’s talk about Medievil.

#100 – Resident Evil 4

Having Resident Evil 4 for my 100th game for this blog is very satisfying (and totally unplanned) because it’s one of the few major influencers that I played at the time of release, and I can really appreciate the impact it’s had on the industry since its release. Whilst it took the series in a direction that wasn’t entirely beneficial to it – and oh god, I have to play 5 next – it popularised the off-shoulder camera that has been in so many games I love. If not for this game, I doubt I would have given the TPS genre the time of day, and I would be so much poorer off for it.

It also helps that people don’t refer to these other TPS games that utilise this camera angle as “Resi 4 clones” either. God, I hate people sometimes.

#99 – Umineko No Naku Koro Ni – Episode 4: Alliance of the Golden Witch

“A story should be like a roller coaster. That is to say before writing a really cruel scene, I have to lift the people’s spirits, for example, with a fun scene… Before writing a scene of pure despair, we must go through scenes of hope. And indeed, when I write, all of this amuses me very much.” – so says Ryushiki07, the author of Umineko.

But I have to ask, after slogging through this chapter – where does it say the fun scenes have to be so damn boring?

#98 – Super Mario 3D World

With a lot of older series that have made the jump from 2D to 3D, I generally prefer the 2D iterations. Partly because of nostalgia – these are the games I grew up with, after all – but also because when you introduce a third dimension, you inevitably introduce frustrating camera angles…and with platforming games, that’s a death sentence.

But there are exceptions to every rule!

#97 – Resident Evil 3

I think I wanted to play Resident Evil 3 from the moment I learned it existed. Part of it was because it originally came out just before I turned 10 and back then anything with a certificate above my age held the appeal that all forbidden things do when you’re a kid, but mostly it was because I thought Nemesis was just so damn cool. I loved the design, and coming off of Resi 2 where Mr. X was so perfectly executed, I was really looking forward to seeing how Nemesis would take it a step further.

I really need to learn to stop looking forward to things.

#96 – Resident Evil 2

Another day, another Resident Evil title! I would have perhaps been done with this slightly sooner, but I discovered on the first day that playing it after 8pm was a bad idea – unless I wanted to be chased by Mr. X in my dreams, too – and due to the fact that shortly after my first playthrough I had to swap over to my shiny new PS5 and carry on from there!

Anyways, this is Part 3 of my main series playthrough. Awaaay we go.

#95 – Resident Evil HD

I remember the HUGE buzz surrounding Resident Evil when it was first released on Gamecube – it looked amazing for its time, it was on a Nintendo platform, and I was 12 years old at the time so of course I wanted to play it but wasn’t allowed to…not that this stopped me of course, because a friend of mine happened to have it.

Anyway, this is Part #2 of my Resident Evil main series playthrough!
