#123 – Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Nothing makes you feel disconnected from the world quite like when everyone worships a video game and you just cannot understand why. Well…maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but I came away from Ori and the Blind Forest feeling slightly confused – did I just play a different game from all these raving self-proclaimed “critics” and legions of drooling fans? Or was there something about it that I just didn’t get for whatever reason? Sometimes I think I’m too cynical for my own good, and other times I think that people’s standards have fallen so far that if you gave them an indie darling like this and a Kemco shovelware title without any prior information they wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

Don’t get me wrong though, it wasn’t BAD or anything. It was good enough to get me to buy the sequel at least…when it was half-price.

#122 – Pokemon Sword

Oh, Pokemon…you’ve been a part of my life since I was ten years old. I’ve been with you since the beginning. I owe you so much – it might not even be an exaggeration to say I owe you everything. If not for you I doubt I would be the person I am today and, whilst I can’t say I particularly like the person I am today, things could be so, so much worse.

But there’s only so much I’m willing to overlook. I think we crossed that line with Generation V. Now we’re so far over the line that we’ve crossed it several times and I wonder where it ends. Probably not here. More’s the pity.

#121 – NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…

I’ve been an avid follower of Yoko Taro’s works since Drakengard, which was a delightfully messed-up, nightmarishly confusing, horrifyingly clunky game about giant babies with teeth that want to destroy the human race…and succeed in most endings. OK, so maybe it was a little bit more complicated than that, but that was my main take from it, because I was a teenager and it was…well, fucking weird. Putting it mildly. But the original NieR…that left an impact on me from the moment they did the first voice teaser with Kainé, and it’s echoed through the last eleven years – I still listen to the soundtrack on a daily basis. It’s my gold standard for soundtrack, my gold standard for storytelling, and one of the best games I’ve ever played. I love NieR.

Since Automata I’ve wanted a remake of Gestalt with Automata’s QoL improvements to combat, visuals, etc. Now I’ve got one. This is going to be tough to talk about…

#119 – New Pokémon Snap

By the time I got an N64 the Gamecube was only a few months away – damn thing was very expensive back then and my parents weren’t about to buy me one; I had to make do with my Gameboy – but I still have very fond memories of the original Pokemon Snap. At the time there just wasn’t anything else like it, and the craze was in full swing so of course it was something I was interested in.

I was never hoping for a sequel or remake, and it came as something of a welcome surprise when it was announced. Especially since Game Freak weren’t handling it.

#118 – Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

I am somewhat ashamed to admit that much of my knowledge of Norse mythology has come from popular culture within the last decade or so – thanks to Jason Aaron’s wonderful Thor run I did a little reading in and around it to see where the inspiration came from, but if I’m really honest, I don’t find Norse mythology, or the viking period, all that captivating. Perhaps because the writings from that time period just aren’t as varied or as colourful as, say, the Roman era. I suppose you have to a certain kind of person to consider the likes of Tacitus and Pliny to be colourful, but…well, I guess I’m that kind of person!

It was inevitable this was never going to reach the heights of Odyssey for me, but I didn’t expect much else.

#117 – Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest

There aren’t enough games that let you play as the villain, and there are even fewer where the line is completely blurred. As someone who finds antagonists infinitely more interesting – after all, without a villain there is no hero, the villain shapes the story – this is something that is a constant disappointment to me in the video game industry. More games need to be about personal struggle and conflict, rather than good vs. evil. I don’t want to feel like I’m on the “right” side all the time, I want to have my thinking and perceptions on what I’m doing in a game challenged.

So, here’s the Conquest side of things.

#116 – Curse of the Dead Gods

Oh look, it’s another action roguelike! I really liked the look of this one – dark, moody visuals with some simple yet effective lighting, fast-paced combat, an interesting gameplay mechanic in the curses, and it didn’t follow the Greek/Norse mythology trend that has been dogging the industry for god knows how many years now. Not that I dislike either of those, but…well, it wasn’t all Greek and Norse in ancient times. Sheesh.

It turns out that first impressions aren’t always everything.

#115 – Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright

I have done some pretty awful and nerve-wracking things for video games – most recently I spent twenty-eight anxiety-fuelled minutes in a queue for a PS5, then another thirty minutes fighting with the website to order a bundle before it booted me out again or they sold out – but by far the worst thing I have ever done is check multiple websites hourly for over a month for the Fire Emblem Fates special edition…because I would be damned if I was going to buy the games separately and a third path digitally.

Hard to believe that was 5 years ago. I’ve only played the games once, and a lot of it has leaked out of my head. Now felt like a good time for a replay…thank you, Fire Emblem Heroes, for giving me four different 5* Camillas.
