#176 – Tales of Arise

Like Final Fantasy, I have a strong love/hate relationship with the Tales series. It’s responsible for some of the best (Symphonia, Berseria) and worst (Abyss, Vesperia) JRPGs I’ve played, and I think that strong juxtaposition of quality is what makes it so difficult for me to maintain a more detached perspective when playing through the games: it’s either good or bad.

Unfortunately, Arise is not good. Not good at all.

#145 – Control

I was a huge fan of Alan Wake when it released on the Xbox 360, it had an absolutely perfect atmosphere to it. Finding the next segments of Alan’s novel a few seconds before events actually happened – or not! – and being barely able to see the shadowy enemies in the night was thrilling. You were constantly under siege in that game and, whilst the narrative took a few turns for the bizarre near the end, it was such an amazing package.

Perhaps because the writings from that time period just aren’t as varied or as colourful as, say, the Roman era. I suppose you have to a certain kind of person to consider the likes of Tacitus and Pliny to be colourful, but…well, I guess I’m that kind of person!

It was inevitable this was never going to reach the heights of Odyssey for me, but I didn’t expect much else.

#104 – Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

I’ve been a Spider-Man fan for most of my life – since I saw the first episode of the 90s TV series. I grew up reading the comics, was absurdly excited for the original movies (although not the “Amazing” movies or the awful MCU ones) and I still keep up with the comics now. Yet I didn’t immediately jump on this when it came out…mostly because my PS4 was in full jet engine mode by then.

But it came with the PS5 bundle, and I am so very glad it did. I really needed this game right now.
