#182 – Pokemon Unbound

It’s interesting that despite being disgusted with Game Freak for many, many years, I have never once considered playing a Pokemon fan game. Perhaps it’s simply that one has never met my criterion for what I would consider a good Pokemon game to be – one that has every Pokemon available in it, a narrative that isn’t the same as every other Pokemon game’s, and doesn’t contain any Fakemon. I’m really not a fan of Fakemon.

Or it could just be that I’m not really a PC gamer and I hadn’t managed to hack my PS Vita until just recently. Either way, this is my first Pokemon Romhack experience!

#135 – Tell Me Why

Since 2015 (we’ll pretend Remember Me never happened) Dontnod have actually put out some really good games, where the compelling narrative has more than made up for the wonky presentation. There have been a few hiccups (Life is Strange 2) but on the whole I’ve found them to be a developer to keep an eye on. Which reminds me, I need to go back to Vampyr and finish it…

Anyways, Happy Pride Month! Let’s talk about Tell Me Why, which more than once turned out to be a very apt name for it.

#128 – A Short Hike

I frequently tell myself that I need to experience more indie titles, yet whenever I do this I find myself overwhelmed by choice…and sometimes underwhelmed by what I ultimately choose to try. I’ve played plenty of great indie titles, but all too often they seem to go “over my head” so to speak. Whenever the game is less about the gameplay and more about the “experience” I tend to falter, because to me the gameplay often IS the experience and it takes a very special kind of game to get me to overlook the fact that I’m not really doing anything significant.

So, let’s talk about A Short Hike I suppose.

#113 – Umineko No Naku Koro Ni – Episode 8: Twilight of the Golden Witch

It really is true what they say: ignorance is bliss. Once you’ve learned something, you cannot unlearn it, and there are definitely things that you wouldn’t (or even shouldn’t) want to know, even if you think you do. I can think of plenty of things I was happier not knowing.

Umineko’s Answers Arcs falls into that category.

#107 – Umineko No Naku Koro Ni – Episode 6: Dawn of the Golden Witch

A piece of unsolicited advice from me to anyone who may happen to be reading this: never force yourself through something if you’re not enjoying it. If you’re not enjoying it, there is no shame in dropping it. This is a sensible thing to do, because there is nothing worse than suffering through media you’re not enjoying if you don’t have to. Your time is valuable, and anything that doesn’t acknowledge that isn’t worth being acknowledged. If it’s bad, then drop it and never look back. Damn what anyone else says.

I need to practice what I preach.

#103 – Umineko No Naku Koro Ni – Episode 5: End of the Golden Witch

I had more than a few complaints about Higurashi, but there was one thing I couldn’t fault it for: the more I read, the more I wanted to read. I wanted to know just what the hell was going on with this game’s story, even if I didn’t particularly care for the characters.

Umineko is turning into the complete opposite of that.

#99 – Umineko No Naku Koro Ni – Episode 4: Alliance of the Golden Witch

“A story should be like a roller coaster. That is to say before writing a really cruel scene, I have to lift the people’s spirits, for example, with a fun scene… Before writing a scene of pure despair, we must go through scenes of hope. And indeed, when I write, all of this amuses me very much.” – so says Ryushiki07, the author of Umineko.

But I have to ask, after slogging through this chapter – where does it say the fun scenes have to be so damn boring?
