#155 – Panzer Dragoon: Remake

One of my favourite games growing up was Lylat Wars on the N64. It was something that I could pick up and play in short bursts, it had multiple pathways, and I could never actually finish it…although I think I got to the final boss once or twice. I’ve been meaning for the longest time to pick up the 3DS port and give it a whirl for old time’s sake.

Anyway, I wanted to play this so badly when I was younger, but I never had the console to play it on. I was so excited for the Switch version. I’m very glad I waited for a sale, though.

So…yeah. Lylat Wars with dragons. Best way to describe this, I think. Although visually it reminds me more of Drakengard than it does Lylat Wars – I actually really enjoyed the visuals for this game, because it took place over so many different environments, and for such basic gameplay it certainly kept me guessing. Tight, narrow corridors and wide open spaces both desolate and natural, it might have only been six very short stages, but at least there was some variety to it!

…and god, the length of this game. I’m SO glad I didn’t immediately cave and pay full price for this, much as I wanted to at the time. It took me less an hour to finish this (with a 92% hit rate, which I am very proud of!) and whilst I enjoyed most of it, it’s…definitely a game out of time. Very short, very basic, and very much in need of more to really qualify as a proper remake. Presentation-wise it was lovely, with plenty of accessibility options and a visual touch-up that I felt was quite charming (and considering the speed at which some enemies flew at me, that I could keep track of them speaks volumes to the improvements made, I’m sure) but…well, I expected more I suppose.

It’s awkward, but there isn’t much I can really say about this game – it didn’t leave an overly strong impression on me; it didn’t really have enough time to! But there aren’t too many games in this particular style these days, which is a real shame to say the least – I feel like a new instalment in this series could be something special when this game plays very well and, despite its ridiculous brevity, is quite the fun experience.
